What to Look for in Mouthwash

Posted on January 20th, 2018

If you’re about to purchase mouthwash, it’s important to make sure it’s the right mouthwash for you. That way it can benefit you the way you want it to. To help you choose the mouthwash you need, our dentist, Dr. Daniel McKay, DDS, is happy to give you some tips. It’s best to select a rinse that has the following characteristics:

  • Fluoride: Fluoride is a mineral that can help your teeth in many ways. In fact, it’s recommended to expose your teeth to fluoride regularly because it strengthens the enamel and helps prevent dental issues. Fluoride mouthwash can do just that.
  • Antibacterial characteristics: Antibacterial mouthwash can kill the bacteria and plaque in your mouth. This is very beneficial because it can help you prevent gingivitis, which is the first stage of gum disease. Gum disease is a serious and dangerous dental issue that should be avoided at all costs.
  • ADA approval: If the American Dental Association has approved the product (the ADA Seal would be printed on the packaging), then it proves that the mouthwash is safe and effective in an oral hygiene routine.
