Do you know the most common types of risk factors for periodontal disease? Periodontal disease, also frequently referred to as gum disease, is a gum tissue infection that can lead to destabilized gums and eventual tooth loss. To help combat the condition, analyze all potential risks in your life and protect yourself accordingly.
Did you know there are several key risks of gum disease that you may have little or no control over? For example, if you are pregnant, you may be at an increased risk for the condition. Similarly, if you have drastic hormonal changes in your body, specifically in young women or girls, are diabetic or are genetically marked for the condition, you’ll be at in an increased risk, and simply need to exercise caution more so than a normal individual.
However, you could also be at an increased risk for the disease due to several bad habits in your life. If you’re taking medications that produce dry mouth as a side effect, you will need to be aware that bad habits can still increase your risk for gum disease. Furthermore, a lack of visiting our dentist, the presence of poor oral hygiene or a poor diet, along with bad lifestyle choices including smoking and chewing tobacco, can also increase your risk.
